An Open Letter To Adobe

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

Andrei Michael Herasimchuk of Design By Fire has written an open letter to Adobe, asking that Adobe release a core set of some of their most important fonts to the public domain. If this succeeds, and Microsoft and Apple play along by including these core fonts in their next operating systems, we would be empowered with a high quality set of fonts for our future designs, instead of stagnating in the current state for years to come. We could do away with a large portion of hacks like image replacement or sIFR. All in all, the net could climb to new heights in terms of legibility, accessibility and asthetics. It’s time to free the net of Arial and the likes!

Please help in making the typographical landscape of the internet richer, and write your own letter of support to Adobe’s co-founder, along with your wish list of fonts, to:

I’m a little surprised nobody has done this sooner, at least in this magnitude. Personally, I’m mainly rooting for Helvetica Neue. Discovered via Veerle.

How To Live Happily With A Great Designer

Here are the things your design team wishes you would know.

Sound familiar? Then go have a look at Seth Godin’s compilation of things your clients should know.
