Andrei Michael Herasimchuk of Design By Fire has written an open letter to Adobe, asking that Adobe release a core set of some of their most important fonts to the public domain. If this succeeds, and Microsoft and Apple play along by including these core fonts in their next operating systems, we would be empowered with a high quality set of fonts for our future designs, instead of stagnating in the current state for years to come. We could do away with a large portion of hacks like image replacement or sIFR. All in all, the net could climb to new heights in terms of legibility, accessibility and asthetics. It’s time to free the net of Arial and the likes!
