50 Affordable Design Products by Famous Designers
April 12th, 2007 by Jerome Dahdah I’ve heard on numerous occasions that buying your stuff at IKEA is kind of not so cool. I can’t really share that opinion. They create innovative stuff that is well designed, the prices are good, and they’re great for DIY projects. The catch, of course, is that a lot of people will have the same things (how’s your Billy bookshelf doing?).
For a more individual touch, designer products come into play. Problem is, they’re terribly expensive. Or are they?
“No!”, say the folks at Designophy, with a list of 50 affordable products by famous designers ($5-$100). Now, you’re still going to have to figure out for yourself if you want to pay $45 for a bottle opener, but these products do stand out. Happy shopping!

In regards to the DIY Since when is painting furniture a hack?
The definition of hack is
1 cut with rough or heavy blows
2 use a computer to gain unauthorized access to data in a system
3 informal manage; cope
The ideas were cool, but they need to get their terminology correct.
50 affordable products, those are cool, more affordable than Design Within Reach.

Rob, thanks for your response.
Well, it’s more than just painting furniture. Right on the front page there’s a neat bag made out of drawer mats. I don’t really mind the term “hack”, since they are essentially taking (and cutting ;)) things apart to create new things they weren’t intended for. There’s also Lifehacker.com, where one could have similar objections. It’s just a word that sounds cool and gets the point across.
On a side note, German readers might also enjoy the DIY section of stylespion.de.
